Self Care: Tips + Playlist
I wrote this on Valentine’s Day, and, as much as I would have loved to be planning for a romantic date out or evening in with a significant other, that wasn’t in the cards for me. In fact, it has never been, but especially not this year. It just so happened that my women’s doctor recommended a minor surgery for me that fell on Valentine’s Day. Since that was the case, I thought it was the perfect time to think about rest and self-care. Luckily for you, you’re likely not having surgery, but if you’re wanting to do some things that remind you to think of yourself just for a few minutes, this might be useful for you.
Self-care is all the talk right now, and it can take many forms, but the idea is self-explanatory. Even if you don’t do exactly as you read in an article, it’s about doing things that are beneficial for your physical, mental, and/or emotional health. Baths and oils are just as critical as introspection and goal-setting, all of which can fall under self-care.
I absolutely love flowers. Roses, Carnations, Lilies- take your pick. They can brighten whatever room they’re in and, for me, it’s therapeutic to prune them and arrange them into a vase.
Take A Bath
I wish I had time to sit in the tub more than I do. Showers are great, but there’s nothing like soaking in warm, aromatic water, especially if you add essential oils and/or flower petals. You don’t have to be at a spa to feel luxurious; set aside time right in your own home to run a bath with candles, possibly a glass of wine, and whatever it is that helps you relax.
One of my favorite things to do is come home and put on the largest clothes I can find. Whatever is the opposite of what you wear daily, put that on. When I’m home, I don’t want to feel any sort of restriction. I need the freedom of moving any way that I want in comfort.
Make A List
It could be one of gratitude, places you’d like to travel, affirmations, qualities you love about yourself, or purchases you’d like to make. The list of lists goes on and on. I don’t recommend to-do lists or lists that remind you of the stresses of everyday life. Forget all of that for a few minutes and write something that will make you feel good about your life.
Although meditation is becoming more common, there are still misconceptions about it. It’s not always sitting with legs crossed and it certainly doesn’t have to involve humming or sitting for long periods of time. It can be five minutes and in whatever position is comfortable to you. You can meditate on the list you made or use the time to completely silence your thoughts. I, myself, would love to make it a daily practice, because refocusing and finding your center over and over again can drastically change the way you move through life.
